Ajax are no longer the super team they were
in the 1970s, but they're still a strong side. What kind of match
are you expecting?
I think Ajax are similar to Sporting Lisbon, but with more quality.
They have good ball possession, they can do more harm. They play
well, but we're at home and in the European Cup you can only win.
Ajax are a team to respect. I've seen lots of Dutch league matches
and I've seen a great difference between the team from Amsterdam
and the others.
How did you get on up front yesterday as
a second striker?
Well. I move in a different way. But I hope I can play on Wednesday
together with Vieri and Crespo, like we did against Torino. But
maybe I will be left out... Patience, even though I'd really like
to play because I've never started a European Cup match from the
first minute. The coach will decide. If I have to remain out,
I will remain out. Without any problems.
Do you see any comparisons with the start
of last season?
Apart from the fact that I was disqualified... I think that by
playing in the European Cup you change a lot psychologically.
We were only thinking about the championship, now we must also
try and win in Europe. This is the difference, you play every
three days. But I'm happy - the thing that gives you the most
rhythm is to play football.
You have two points more than at the same stage last season...
We need to get more points than last year. It seems to me that
there is a greater difference between the teams that fight for
the Scudetto and those who combat against relegation. And then,
it can always happen that Modena win at Olimpico stadium against
Roma, but I think a lot more points will be necessary to win.
What do you think about Roma's start to
the season?
They're in a difficult situation. Totti is angry, they have to
find the right path to come out of the difficult moment. When
they found an opponent like Real [Madrid], but also like Modena,
who are capable of playing the ball around well, they got into
difficulty. I'm happy about this because they are our direct rivals.
Are six points from the first matches already
a handicap?
Yes, because like I said, I think a lot more points will be needed
to win this year. But we're only at the second round and the whole
championship is still to come.
Why didn't Vieri celebrate after that fantastic
goal?
Because away from home there are few fans... I'm joking. There
are players who score and shout very much, and others who simply
return to the midfield. I think whoever paid for the ticket yesterday
could be content just with that goal. Then there were a lot of
emotions at the end. The Inter strikers must get a lot of goals.
At the moment there are only three of us, but then Kallon and
Ventola will arrive. Us strikers in particular must give a lot.
