| Dump Recoba says legend
19-05-2003
Legendary Inter ‘keeper Giuliano Sarti believes that the
club should sell the enigma that is Alvaro Recoba.
The Uruguayan is one of the most highly rated players in Europe
but has rarely lived up to his potential for the Nerazzurri.
"I would sell Recoba," the 1960’s star told ‘Radio
Rai’ on Monday. "When he is on form then he can win you
a game on his own but that isn’t always guaranteed.
"There is also a massive question mark as to exactly what
is his best position for the club."
Recoba admitted on Saturday that his future is in the hands of
President Massimo Moratti as links to Sampdoria and Barcelona continue.
But Sarti has called for more changes at the San Siro after the
club ensured a record 14th season without the Scudetto.
"The midfield is another problem area," he continued.
"No one is certain of their place and the best players are
often left on the bench. This doesn’t help the team."
Boss Hector Cuper is also a major talking point as Moratti considers
whether to confirm him for the new campaign.
"Up to now Cuper has proved that he is not a winner,"
added Sarti. "But that could change. I think he is a good Coach
but needs more help with the reality of the Italian game.
"But I call for Moratti to be patient. After all Helenio Herrera
won the League in his third year with the club. And next season
will be Cuper’s third campaign with Inter."
SampDORIA swoop for Recoba?
18-05-2003
Walter Novellino is celebrating a promotion to Serie A with Sampdoria
and reveals a possible swoop for Alvaro Recoba.
"That link came from the year he first burst onto the scene
with me at Venezia," admitted the tactician.
The Inter star is on the transfer list following another dismal
performance in the Champions’ League derby.
If he wishes to stay in Italy, the most likely side to make a bid
is Samp, but there is also interest from Manchester United and Barcelona.
" The Uruguayan is certainly an excellent player, but we must
show respect for all the squad who got us back in Serie A. We have
some very talented youngsters in the side."
The Blucerchiati were runaway favourites for the title when the
season began, but the results were not always so impressive.
"There are always going to be tough moments in such a long
campaign," noted the Coach.
"Perhaps the two back to back trips to Siena and Cagliari
were the most difficult weeks for us, but we managed to maintain
concentration throughout."
Sampdoria have been linked with bids for several top stars, including
Atalanta goalkeeper Massimo Taibi and midfielder Cristiano Doni.
"We are already competitive and this team can do very well
in the top flight next season,"insisted President Riccardo
Garrone.
"Serie B is tougher than it looks and there are many interesting
young players who can make the difference in any division."
