| Recoba ready for Inter
call
Thursday, 16 October 2003
Alvaro Recoba is ready to come in from the wilderness and aid Internazionale's
cause against Brescia at the weekend.
The Uruguayan forward has not featured for Inter this season due to a combination
of illness and the superb form of young striker Obafemi Martins.
But Recoba is set to earn a recall to the Nerazzurri fold for
Saturday's Serie A tussle against Brescia with Dutch international
Andy van der Meyde among Hector Cuper's injury problems.
Recoba insists he is not a miracle worker as Inter seek to bounce
back from their woeful Milan derby showing but is confident he
can answer Cuper's call.
"I don't feel myself that I can be a saviour," Recoba
told La Repubblica. "This can't be required of any player.
"Anyway, I feel good and I want to answer on the pitch because
I don't want to lose the affection of those who still believe in
me, starting with the president (Massimo) Moratti.
"Cuper? I've accepted his choices, even when these penalised
me and I didn't agree with them. I've still thought he was doing
good for Inter."
Recoba is unlikely to earn a starting place with Christian Vieri
and Martins the preferred partnership of Cuper but the South American
is expected to be on the substitutes' bench.
With van der Meyde almost certainly ruled out of the contest,
another injury concern is defensive lynchpin Fabio Cannavaro.
The Italian international suffered a knock to his knee during
a training session and is rated doubtful for the Brescia encounter.
