Two fantastic Recoba goals beat
Bologna
09-03-2003:
Two spectacular Alvaro Recoba strikes saw off ten-man Bologna to
put Inter back in the Scudetto chase.
Recoba: "I've also played well on the wings on other
occasions, but it's more difficult. I think I played well as a second
striker today. Playing twenty or forty minutes away from the goal
isn't the same thing, inevitably you lose lucidity. We should have
played more with the ball on the ground today in order to exploit
the numerical advantage. The defeat in Turin damaged us and it was
important to win today for this reason.".
For sure, I can do more harm that far up front. I
also adapt myself to playing where the boss tells me to by making
more effort, this is understandable. In any case, I always give
everything, I'm never lacking in effort. I'm very satisfied, above
all because my goals gave the team victory. I also pleased about
having scored again from a free kick. I didn't realise immediately
that I had scored, then I turned towards the bench and I saw everyone
shouting. I can't wait to get back home and see the goals again
on TV." |

Cuper: "I said just one word to Recoba in the changing
room at the end of the match - fantastic."
Were you expecting Juventus to draw with Udinese?
Recoba: "I was expecting a draw... I hoped to gain ground on
the Bianconeri. I think Juventus are the most in-form side at the
moment, but we must do well and do everything possible to keep track
of them."
Inter gave a good reply in Bologna ...
Recoba: "Yes, it was an important reply after the defeat in
Turin. By reading the newspapers we seemed done for, but it's still
us that are directly behind Juventus . The last championship taught
us a lesson, this tournament can be won on the last day. We must
do everything possible to not lose sight of Juventus , we have to
keep pace so we can then get ahead at the end."
How did you get on in the position of second striker?
Recoba: "You always want to play, it doesn't matter whether
in the position of second striker or wide midfielder. As a striker
I can play closer to the penalty area and it's easier to score goals.
As a wide player I have other duties and I play further away from
the goal. You basically don't tire as much if you're a forward.
But last year I scored lots of goals even by playing in a wide position..."
It will be a decisive match against Newcastle, do you regret
not being able to play?
Recoba: "Yes, I'm very disappointed that I can't be there.
I just hope Inter get through the round and I'm sure they'll do
it. By doing so I'll have the chance to play after the three-match
disqualification. Inter will play a great match and I will be back
to play from the quarter-finals on."
