A GOAL FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS
Tuesday, 05 October 2004
Published on page 6 of today's Corriere dello Sport is an important statistic related to Alvaro Recoba's goal against Roma on Sunday. El Chino's superb solo effort at the Stadio Olimpico was Inter's 4000th goal in the Serie A since the competition became a one-division championship in 1929/30, when the Nerazzurri played under the name of Ambrosiana-Inter. The number includes the 11 goals scored by Inter so far this season.
Compared with the statistics often reported on this site, there is a slight discrepancy. The championships played from 1929/30 to 2004/05 have all been one-division competitions, with the exclusion of the 1945/46 campaign - the first after World War II. That season, which is not included in our stats (provided by Football Data ), the championship was divided into North Italy and Central-Southern Italy divisions. The Nerazzurri, who returned to playing under the name of Inter, scored 52 goals in the first, divisional stage and 20 in the final phases, which accounts for the 72-goal difference between the two sets of stats (4000 against 3928).
